How to convert a PNG to ICNS

  1. Add your image. Drop a PNG (or JPG, WebP or SVG) onto the box above. Square images of 1024 × 1024 pixels give the best result.
  2. Pick a shape. Mac squircle places your picture on Apple's icon grid with rounded corners, margin and shadow. Keep as is leaves your artwork untouched and only resizes it.
  3. Download. Click Download .icns. The file contains every size macOS uses, including the Retina variants.
  4. Use it. In Finder, select an app, press ⌘ I and drag the .icns file onto the small icon at the top-left of the Info window. Full guide →

What's inside the .icns file

An ICNS file is a container that holds the same icon at several sizes so macOS can pick the sharpest one for the Dock, Finder, Spotlight and menus. DockDoodle writes PNG data for each of these entries:

TypePixelsUsed as
icp416 × 1616 pt
icp5 / ic1132 × 3232 pt / 16 pt @2x
ic1264 × 6432 pt @2x
ic07128 × 128128 pt
ic08 / ic13256 × 256256 pt / 128 pt @2x
ic09 / ic14512 × 512512 pt / 256 pt @2x
ic101024 × 1024512 pt @2x

Small sizes are produced by halving the image step by step instead of in one jump, which keeps edges crisp at 16 and 32 pixels. More detail in the macOS icon size guide.

Prefer the command line?

Download All sizes (.zip). It includes a ready-made .iconset folder, so on a Mac you can build the icon yourself with Apple's own tool:

iconutil -c icns my-icon.iconset

FAQ

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with JavaScript. Your image never leaves your device, and the converter keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.

Which sizes are inside the .icns file?

16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 and 1024 pixel PNG images, stored under the icns types macOS looks for, including the @2x Retina variants.

Can I convert JPG, WebP or SVG files?

Yes. Any image your browser can open works, including PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP and SVG. SVG files are drawn at full resolution, so they stay sharp.

What does the Mac squircle option do?

It places your image on Apple's 1024-pixel icon grid: an 824-pixel rounded square with continuous corners, a transparent margin and an optional soft shadow, so the icon sits naturally next to other Mac apps. Choose Keep as is if your image already has its own shape.
